Witnessing the Aurora Australis is one of Tasmania's most sought-after natural experiences, but it is also one of the most elusive. Unlike attractions that can be scheduled, the Southern Lights depend on a rare combination of solar activity, clear skies, darkness and favourable weather conditions. 

Even with careful planning and expert forecasting, there are no guarantees. When everything aligns, however, the reward is extraordinary. Curtains of green, pink and purple light dance across the southern sky, creating a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle that few people are fortunate enough to witness.

Aurora Alert Register

When the conditions indicate a strong likelihood of the Southern Lights being visible from southern Tasmania and the skies are free of cloud, guests who have registered their interest will receive an alert, giving them the opportunity to join a guided aurora experience at short notice. 

While sightings can never be guaranteed, this service provides guests with the best possible chance of witnessing one of Tasmania's most spectacular natural phenomena.

Tasmania's weather is ever changing and unpredictable. This tour requires clear skies for a premium experience. The Aurora experience operates under a separate 24 hour cancellation policy, because departures are activated by weather rather than scheduled in advance. If we judge that conditions are unsuitable, or unsafe, we will make that call.

No payment is taken when you register. The $250 is payable on the day, only if your tour goes ahead.

What’s Included

Your evening begins with a warm welcome from our night-sky experts who will guide you through the why and how of Aurora’s.

Strong Aurora are visible by the naked eye, however weaker events are best viewed through a camera with long exposure capabilities. During weaker solar storms we offer portable screens so that our guests can view images of the Aurora through our hosts professional camera.

Photography lovers can also capture stunning images of the night sky with expert guidance from our hosts. We also offer guidance on how to capture Aurora images with your phone if it has the capabilities, generally only newer models, post 2025 are suitable.

To keep you comfortable throughout the tour, we provide a warm beverage and light snacks creating a relaxing, friendly atmosphere under the skies.

A digital copy of the Aurora image, captured by your host, will be sent to you via email after the tour.

What You Will Need

  • Good footwear for uneven ground and cold nights

  • Warm clothing, it will be cold out there. This needs to be a warm jumper and pants, beanie, gloves and a good waterproof jacket just in case. It’s better to have it and not need it.

  • Headtorches are desirable if you have them
